Texas loses a state treasure. Nelda LaneyNelda Laney, wife of former five-term Speaker of the Texas House Pete Laney, passed away last week and will be sorely missed across the state. A native of Hale Center, Nelda was often lauded as the “First Lady of West Texas” and was integral to the Texas Capitol restoration in the 1990’s. Former President George Bush remembers Nelda as a “dear friend” to him and former first lady Laura Bush, especially during his time as Governor.  To read more…

Former Governor Rick Perry joins the 23rd season line-up of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”. Tune in for the season premiere on September 12th to watch Perry compete against Olympic gold medalists Ryan Lochte and Laurie Hernandez, as well as rapper Vanilla Ice. Perry follows in the dancing shoes of former majority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Tom DeLay (R-Sugarland) who appeared on the show in its ninth season. To read more…

76 days until Election Day. Voter IDDo you know the latest on Voter ID requirements? The Texas Secretary of State website has been updated to reflect an August 10th court order. If you are unable to obtain one of the 7 forms of photo ID when voting in person, voters may complete a declaration explaining why and bring one form of additional supporting documentation like a valid voter registration certificate.

Completion of first phase of HHSC consolidation around the corner. HHSC org chartThe final transition plan for the Health and Human Services Commission has been approved with Phase 1 going into effect September 1st. Phase 1 includes the consolidation of client services, regardless of agency (DARS, DADS, DSHS, HHSC), under the newly created division of Medical and Social Services. Phase 2, effective September 2017, will consolidate regulatory services and the operation of state living centers and state hospitals.

UT Professor’s fail to make the grade in blocking campus carry.books not bullets

A U.S. district judge declined to block implementation of campus carry, despite pleas from three professors at the UT Austin. The professors’ suit claims that guns in the classroom could suppress class discussion, thereby violating students’ First Amendment free speech rights. The case will work its way through the courts, as campus carry remains in effect and classes resume today.

Texas to appeal Voter ID decision.Vote AquiAttorney General Ken Paxton says Texas will file an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court, in hopes that the 5th Circuit Court’s ruling against the Texas voter ID law will be overturned. In the interim, a lower court has developed a temporary plan to allow those without government-issued ID’s to vote.

Bill HammondAfter 18 years of leading the Texas Association of Business, Bill Hammond plans to resign as CEO at the end of this year. Hammond intends to open his own lobby firm where he will focus on issues including economic development, health care, education and taxation.

Texas Ag Advisors for Trump.

TrumpHalf a dozen influential Texans have joined Donald Trump’s 64-member Agricultural Advisory Committee. This Texas delegation includes former Governor Rick Perry; Texas Agricultural Commissioner Sid Miller; U.S. Representative Mike Conaway (Midland); and Helen Groves, daughter of the King Ranch founder. Members of this committee will help shape Trump’s agriculture policy.

Democrats nominate Thierry to replace Rep. Borris Miles.

Shawn Thierry, an attorney and former judicial candidate, secured the Democratic nomination to succeed Representative Borris Miles (D-Houston) in House District 146. After Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee’s unexpected death in January, Texas Senator Rodney Ellis became the Democratic nominee to replace Lee and Miles was nominated to assume Ellis’ senate seat, leaving Miles’ seat in the House up for grabs.

Texans go for gold.

Over 100 athletes with ties to Texas are competing at this year’s Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, over 40 current or former student athletes from the University of Texas and Texas A&M. Simone Biles, who hails from Spring, Texas, helped the US Women’s Gymnastics team to secure gold this week and is being dubbed one of the best female gymnasts of all time.

Laura Thompson replaces Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon.

Laura Thompson, a free-lance writer, was elected to replace Representative Ruth Jones McClendon (D-San Antonio), who resigned in January. Though she will only represent House District 120 for a few months before November elections, Rep. Thompson’s ran as an independent, marking the first time in half a century that a candidate not affiliated with a major party has won a seat in the Texas Legislature.

The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum’s Imax Theater is closed for more than a face lift. Installation of a groundbreaking film projection system-known as Imax with Laser-is underway. Imax with Laser offers a larger color range and a brightness increase of up to 50% in both 2D and 3D films, creating an unprecedented level of realism for movie-goers. The Theater is scheduled to reopen on October 7th.

Campus carry goes into effect.

As of August 1st, those holding a concealed handgun license (CHL) may carry guns on all public university campuses in Texas. Campus zones excluded from carry laws include sports arenas, research labs, and daycare facilities. Campus safety officials have emphasized that the new policy permits concealed carry, not open carry, meaning that guns should not be visible to others on campus.

Panel rescinds recommendation to replace STAAR.

At its final meeting, the Commission on Next Generation Assessment, a special panel tasked with recommending improvements to Texas’ testing and school accountability, struck language in its draft report that would’ve called for periodic, computer-based testing to replace STAAR exams. This shift comes a month before the panel’s final report is due to legislators and Governor Abbott on September 1st.

Federal law aims to increase funding to state addiction programs.

The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, recently signed into law by the President, represents a bipartisan effort to curtail opioid prescription drug and heroin addiction. Texas Senator John Cornyn has been a vocal cosponsor of the bill, as Texas opioid deaths have risen 80% in the past two decades. Addiction programs across the state are eager for a bump in federal funding soon.

Big XII getting a little bigger?

Just when everyone thought Big XII expansion was off the table, a unanimous vote by current Big XII schools has called for a reconsideration of expansion. BYU, UConn, Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Memphis are all in the running for addition to the conference but Gov. Abbott, UT’s President Fenves, and others have voiced support for adding the University of Houston.

Tower garden

August 1st marked the 50th anniversary of the tragic, 1966 shooting that took place in the heart of UT’s campus. Survivors, Austin leaders, and members of the campus community gathered to commemorate victims and rededicate the Tower Garden, located just north of UT’s iconic tower. The Tower Garden includes a plaque memorializing victims of the shooting.

Federal court strikes Texas Voter ID Law.

Texas’ 2011 voter identification law outlines the types of photo ID allowed at the polling station. Last week, the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the law violates the federal Voting Rights Act, reasoning that the Texas statute’s short list of permissible identification forms puts undue burden on voters. Texas leaders continue to search for methods to eliminate voter fraud. To read more…

The Texas Department of Public Safety has temporarily closed the south entrance to the capitol until further notice. Visitors are advised to use the north, east and west entrances, which remain open. Jeanie Wyatt is the newest addition to the Employees Retirement System of Texas Board of Trustees (ERS). Wyatt has national accolades for her work in the financial industry and is currently CEO and Chief Investment Officer to the South Texas Money Management (STMM), based in San Antonio. Rep. Borris Miles (D-Houston) has been selected by a majority of SD 13 precinct chairs to succeed Senator Rodney Ellis and will run unopposed in November. Now the precinct chairs of House District 146 will decide who will replace Miles on the ballot for the House race. This will happen sometime in August.  To read more…

Texas delegates deliver votes.

Yesterday at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, states officially delivered votes for the party’s nominee. For the first time in 40 years, the majority of Texas’ votes went to a candidate who is not the GOP nominee. The breakdown of Texas votes: 104 to Sen. Ted Cruz, 48 to Donald Trump, and 3 to Sen. Marco Rubio. The final tally for Trump was 1,725 and 475 for Cruz. To read more…

The 50,000 square foot facility offers 23,000 square feet of climbing surface with 250 different configurations that are rotated every seven weeks. Yoga and fitness classes are also offered. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has endorsed Rep. Borris Miles in the race to replace Sen. Rodney Ellis in Senate District 13. Rep. Senfronia Thompson has received the endorsement of two congressmen, eight legislators, and the Houston Chronicle. Former City Controller Ron Green, has not secured any major endorsements. The SD 13 precinct chairs meet Saturday, July 16, to decide who will take Ellis’ place as the Democratic nominee on November’s ballot.  To read more…

Laura Ryan, Vice President of Market Representation and Dealer Development for Gulf States Toyota, has been appointed to serve the remainder of Commissioner Jeff Moseley’s term set to expire in February 2016. Governor Greg Abbott also appointed Mike Clements for a term to expire January 1, 2020, and Jeffrey Barnhart, Sheila Faske, and Robert Isbell and reappointed Ryan Matthews and Robert Vezzetti, M.D. for terms to expire January 1, 2022. Texas A&M University and Sam Houston State University have been awarded $500,000 for a joint research project to study the monarch butterfly and its migratory habits. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering putting the monarch on the federal endangered species list. Data from this project aims to determine the level of protection needed. To read more…

Education Commissioner Mike Morath has announced how $116 million in Pre-K grants will be split among 578 school districts and charter schools. Grant amounts range from $3,600 to $9.2 million. Awards will be paid in two installments—the first immediately and the second in the fall. To read more…

The Texas Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state in the Southwest Royalties lawsuit that would have exempted metal pipes, tubing, and other equipment used in oil and gas extraction from sales taxes.
